Dodgers want to extend Dave Roberts this offseason, general manager says

Dave Roberts entered the postseason slightly on the hot seat after failing to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers beyond the first round of the playoffs two seasons prior, in 2022 and 2023. The Dodgers were unhappy with their recent performances in the playoffs, and if they had gone out in the playoffs. Again in the first round – especially after the acquisitions the Dodgers made last season – there was a chance they could have moved on from Roberts.

A month later, with a second World Series victory, Roberts not only got his job, but probably an extension as well. At MLB general managers meetings, Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes said the team was I’m looking to finalize an extension with Roberts this offseason. He noted that he views Roberts as the long-term manager, although no extension negotiations have yet taken place.

Roberts once again confirmed why he deserves to be the Dodgers manager in the future. Since taking over the team in 2016, Roberts has become one of the best managers in MLB with a Hall of Fame-worthy resume.

During his tenure with the Dodgers, Roberts led the Dodgers to the playoffs in every season. The Dodgers have won the National League West Division in all but one of those years, and even set the franchise record for wins in a single season in 2022 with 111. The Dodgers have appeared in the World Series four times under Roberts , winning titles at home in 2020 and now in 2024.

Roberts is currently fourth all-time in MLB winning percentage and first among active managers. He has a winning percentage of .627, which ranks only behind Vic Harris, Rube Foster and Dave Malarcher. He also has the sixth-most playoff wins among managers with 56. He overall has an 851-506 regular season record and a 56-44 playoff record.

On top of everything he has accomplished in his career, Roberts has handled adversity particularly well this season. He called a meeting in September after Tyler Glasnow was ruled out for the season, a meeting that several players credited with turning around the season. He dealt with numerous injuries that limited the team to just three starters, while leading his team to a World Series victory.
