Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge Manchester United for the last time as interim boss against Leicester City on Sunday.

United scored four times in the first half in a 5-2 win over the Foxes in van Nistelrooy’s first game in charge. Carabao Cup last week.

After a draw against Chelsea and a first European victory of the season against PAOK on Thursday, the Dutchman will look to finish in style.

Amad Diallo strengthened his arguments for a starting role with a superb individual performance against the Greek champions, scoring twice in the second half. The Ivorian started on the right of United’s attack with Alejandro Garnacho on the left and Marcus Rashford coming off the substitutes’ bench in the second half.

While he was forced off again due to a foot problem late on, Amad was back on the pitch barefoot after the final whistle, with Van Nistelrooy hoping he will be declared fit for Sunday’s match when he will speak at a press conference on Friday.

Mason Mount came on as a second-half substitute on Thursday after recovering from his most recent setback, but United remain without a host of other players.

Kobbie Mainoo is yet to return to full training and remains sidelined with Harry Maguire, both being left out of England’s final squad this week.

Luke Shaw returned to first-team training for the first time in three months but will not be fit enough to return on Sunday. Tyrell Malacia is also returning and will likely get minutes for the under-21 team before any first-team action.

Leny Yoro, for his part, is progressing and could be in contention for Rubem Amorim’s first game in charge against Ipswich Town on November 24.

How United could line up this weekend…

Van Nistelrooy named a strong squad on Thursday evening, with Matthijs de Ligt the only first-team player to be given a night off.
