Hundreds gather to honor father and son killed in Mesa plane crash

CHANDLER, AZ — Hundreds of people gathered Saturday evening to honor and remember a father and son who lost their lives in a plane crash in Mesa Tuesday.

Cars lined the streets as the sun set near Grahm Kimball’s school in remembrance of the 12-year-old and his father Drew Kimball.

Gathered in prayer and song, classmates, family and friends remembered the boundless positivity of both.

“They were so full of love, so full of joy,” said Kyle Worthen, a close family friend, recalling that they were “some of the best” he knew.

Drew and Grahm were among five people who died Tuesday when a small plane attempted to take off near Falcon Field Airport in Mesa.

Worthen says both were active in their church, loved baseball and the LA Dodgers and enjoyed time spent with family and friends.

“It’s heartbreaking … to see kids who aren’t going to experience a lot of life’s moments,” Worthen said.

The tragedy was particularly heavy on the Kimball family, who recently lost another child to suicide a few months earlier.

Worthen noted that this latest loss adds to the family’s grief, but said their faith will help the Kimballs cope with this difficult time.

“They may be separated physically now, but not spiritually,” Worthen said.
