Ibrahima Konate has joked that he was surprised by Virgil van Dijk’s role in Liverpool’s opening goal in their 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday. Darwin Nunez strikes and Mohamed Salah secured victory for the Reds, as Arne Slot’s men moved five points clear at the top of the table. Premier League painting.

Van Dijk played an essential role in Liverpool first match, launching the Reds’ counterattack by sprinting after a loose ball on the right flank, then playing a missed first pass to Salah run on.

While the Egyptian was going to be eliminated by Leon Bailey, Nuñez was alert to the loose ball as he rounded Emiliano Martinez before heading home to give Liverpool the lead in front of goal.

It was his third goal of the season after being recalled to Slot’s starting XI. And while Konate made a big prediction about the Uruguayan after the final whistle, he also couldn’t help but tease his captain and central partner of the Reds.

“I didn’t expect he could run all the way there and give Mo the pass!” he said. “Honestly, it was a really good goal from Virg, Mo and Darwin at the end.

“I’m very happy for him (Nunez) and he has to keep going, keep pushing and he will score more goals, I’m sure.”

Meanwhile, Konaté was full of praise for the goalkeeper. Caoimhin Kelleher thanking the Irishman for his role in keeping consecutive clean sheets.

The shutout was the goalkeeper’s third of the season in the absence of the injured Alisson Becker, but the first in the Premier League.

“We also have to thank Caoimhin (Kelleher) because he made two superb saves from Aston Villa set pieces,” he told the club website. “He’s worked so hard since I’ve been here at Liverpool.

“He’s been here before me but since I’ve been here he’s worked so hard and so well. And so when he gets the opportunity to play, he shows the world how good he is. Yes, I am very happy for him.

Konate has been impressive himself this season and admitted he wants to be considered one of the best defenders in the world.

“I’m very happy,” he said after the victory. “I’ve worked really hard every day to be the best at my job in the world and I just have to keep going, keep pushing, and it will happen one day for sure.”
