What’s open and closed on Remembrance Day in Metro Vancouver

Here’s what’s open and closed in Metro Vancouver over the Memorial Day long weekend.

Remembrance Day is a statutory holiday across Canada, giving hundreds of thousands of workers and their families an opportunity to reflect on the country’s military history.

Check ahead to see what’s open and closed in Metro Vancouver over the Remembrance Day long weekend:

Purchases

Malls in Metro Vancouver are open over the long weekend, although some will observe reduced hours Monday, delaying opening until after the traditional moment of silence at 11 a.m.

Unless otherwise noted, these shopping centers are open on Memorial Day from 11:05 a.m. to 7 p.m.:

Central Pacific
Richmond Center
Royal Park (opens at 11:15 a.m.)
The incredible Brentwood (opens at 11 a.m.)
Guildford town center
Metropolis to Metrotown
Willowbrook Shopping Center (closes at 6 p.m.)

THE Costco stores in Metro Vancouver, including Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, Port Coquitlam, Surrey, Langley and Abbotsford, are all open on Remembrance Day.

THE Ikea Coquitlam and Richmond stores are open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays.

For factory outlet buyers, the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet near the Vancouver International Airport will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., while Tsawwassen Mills in Delta will be open from 11:05 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Grocery stores and pharmacies are generally open during the Memorial Day long weekend, although some may have reduced hours on Monday.


Attractions

If you’re looking for activities to keep kids and visitors entertained, there are plenty of options, as most attractions around Vancouver are open.

Scientific world will be open as usual from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with early entry at 9:30 a.m. for members.

At Kits Point, both Vancouver Museum and the Vancouver Maritime Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., while the HR MacMillan Space Center will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

In downtown Vancouver, the Vancouver Art Gallery welcomes visitors during its usual hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., while Overview of Canada will operate from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

In Stanley Park, the Vancouver Aquarium will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.


Recreation

Most Vancouver community centers will be closed on Remembrance Day, but a few plan to remain open, including:

• False Creek: 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
• Hastings: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Kerrisdale — 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
• Killarney — 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Mount Pleasant — 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• Rotunda — 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
• Sunset: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

A dozen fitness centers across the city will be closed. The city’s ice rinks and golf courses – Fraserview, Langara and McCleery – will be open.

Most swimming pools will remain open. Kensington Swimming Pool will be closed on Remembrance Day Monday. The rest of the city’s public swimming pools will be open.

Before leaving, visit the city website for times of specific locations.

For libraries, all except the Carnegie branch in the Downtown Eastside will be closed on October 14.

Food and drink

Most restaurants and cafes, especially large chains, will remain open on Memorial Day. Family restaurants and small cafes may close on Bank Holiday Monday, so check carefully before you go.


TransLink

TransLink, SkyTrain and SeaBus buses will operate on statutory holiday schedules on Memorial Day.

Public transportation will be free Monday for past and present veterans and military personnel. Eligible individuals simply need to present their badge, military ID, veteran service card or appear in uniform to travel for free.

The West Coast Express will not operate. Keep in mind that holiday fares will be in effect, so commuters will only need a single zone fare to travel in all zones.


Government offices

Vancouver and Surrey City Halls will be closed over the long weekend and will reopen on Tuesday, November 12. The situation is similar for government offices, including Service Canada, passport offices and ICBC sites.

Canada Post will not collect or deliver mail on November 11. Banks will also be closed.

Most liquor stores in Metro Vancouver will be open Monday with shortened hours of noon to 6 p.m.
