Flying Fijians achieve historic result as they beat Wales 24-19

The Fiji Water Flying Fijians claimed a historic 24-19 victory over Wales in their second Autumn Series match at the Principality Stadium this morning.

This is the first time Fiji have beaten Wales in Cardiff.

Swire Shipping’s Fijian Drua flyhalf Caleb Muntz was the toast of the Flying Fijians team as he scored a total of 19 points with a try, a conversion and 4 penalty kicks.

Wales took an early lead after winger Blair Murray scored a converted try before Muntz converted a penalty to lead 7-3 inside the first 10 minutes of the match.

Wales extended their lead to 14-3 after being awarded a penalty try in the 19th minute following an infringement by Fijian number 8 Elia Canakaivata who was subsequently shown a yellow card for it.

Muntz then scored a well-worked try in the 24th minute after a fine break inside Welsh territory and converted his own try to help Fiji trail 14-10.

Fiji were further reduced to 13 men after Semi Radradra was shown a yellow card for contact to the head while making a tackle which was later upgraded to a red card after further review by the TMO.

Wales held a slim 14-10 lead at the break.

Fiji started the second half strong and scored 11 points thanks to two shots on goal from Muntz and an unconverted try from Josua Tuisova’s center to take a 21-14 lead.

Wales responded in the 65th minute with an unconverted try from Ellis Bevan to lead 21-19 before Muntz put the final nail in the coffin with a penalty on goal in the 74th minute.

Wales had a chance to steal the game just before the end of the game, but they sent the ball inside the Fiji 5-yard line after a superb defensive effort from the visitors.

The victory is Fiji’s second victory against Wales in 15 matches and the first since 2007.

Fiji will now focus on their 3rd match of the autumn series against Spain on Sunday at 2am in Valladolid, Spain.
