What’s open and closed on Remembrance Day, November 11, in Ontario

Remembrance Day is not a statutory holiday in Ontario, but some places are closed.

This year, November 11 falls on a Monday and communities across Canada will hold public ceremonies at local cenotaphs.

Armistice Day, or Remembrance Day, as it is now known, was originally a day to honor the war dead after the First World War. The armistice agreement was signed between Germany and the Allied forces in Paris on Monday, November 11, 1918. The ceasefire came into effect at 11 a.m.

The first Armistice Day was celebrated in 1919 in Canada.

Royal Canadian Legion branches across Canada hold parades and Remembrance Day ceremonies to honor veterans and residents can find the closest ceremony at their website here.

Many cities also hold civic ceremonies. Mississauga is hosting a ceremony Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Mississauga Civic Center Community Memorial, located in upper Celebration Square at 300 City Center Dr.

Brampton has a parade and ceremony at Ken Whillans Square, Cenotaph, 2 Wellington Street West, on November 11.

As Remembrance Day is not a statutory holiday in Ontario, workplaces are not required to give employees the day off. However, some businesses may choose to close their doors or grant employees time off to attend a ceremony.

What is open:

Most shops and services will be open during usual hours. Major shopping centers such as Square One Shopping Centre, Bramalea Town Centre, Sherway Gardens and Eatons Center are open. Check with individual stores before you go.

Major grocery stores such as Loblaws, Sobeys, Metro and No Frills will operate on regular schedules.

LCBO stores can choose to close or open later. The beer store has confirmed that most Ontario stores will open at 12 p.m. on November 11. Some Ottawa area beer stores will open at 12:30 p.m.

Most provinces and municipalities government services such as libraries and community centers should be open, although it is always a good idea to check.

Confirmed City of Mississauga offices and services will operate as usual on Monday. Peel Region said all services are operating as usual with the exception of Community recycling centers which are closed on Mondays, November 11.

Public schools will be open.

What is closed:

Canada Post, Service Canada, Passport and others federal government services will be closed.

Banks are generally closed.

There are nine official holidays in Ontario: New Year’s Day, Family Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Boxing Day (December 26).
