Supreme Court to examine procedure under Preservation of Trees Act for cutting trees in Delhi

On June 24, while he was taking care of MC Mehta In this case, the top court had ordered a massive tree plantation drive after observing the dire situation in Delhi due to the heatwave.

The present plea urged the Court to direct the Delhi Government and the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change to ensure protection and preservation of existing trees and forests in Delhi.

He contends that apart from proper and responsible plantation activity, existing mature trees must be protected to preserve the right to life guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution.

He therefore requested the Court to restrain the Delhi government from allowing any felling of trees, without the court’s permission.

The plea further seeks an order restraining the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change from allowing diversion of forests in Delhi, without the court’s permission.
