The appeal for Christmas gifts gives hope to young people leaving care

For young people in Surrey who have left the care system, the run-up to Christmas can be a difficult time.

Many care leavers “struggle with the rising cost of living and cannot always access food banks”, according to the New Leaf service which supports young people aged 16 to 25 facing emotional and mental health problems.

The service is asking the public to donate gifts to its Christmas sack project, with the option to choose from an online wish list.

New Leaf clinical lead Emrald Greenidge said young people who have already received gifts through the project have been “deeply moved by the generosity of others”.

Ben, 21, said the donated items were “the first gifts I’ve received in years”.

Another care leaver said: “I’m very grateful for my gifts, I’m surprised people give such lovely things. »

The New Leaf service, run by the Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, said donations would provide young people with “a bag of presents to open on Christmas Day, reminding them that they are not alone during what may be a particularly difficult time of year.

Donations can be made through the service’s Amazon wishlist, containing “items that are most needed and can help brighten someone’s day.”

In addition to gifts, donations of shelf-stable food items are also needed to create food baskets, “ensuring these young people both holiday cheer and essential supplies.”

All donations must arrive by Friday, November 29, to allow time for packaging and distribution.

Gifts and food donations can be sent directly from Amazon or posted to: c/o Care Leavers, Ramsay House, Richmond Crescent, Epsom, KT19 8PH.
