Frank Lampard and Michael Owen are both optimistic about Arsenal’s future. Premier League title chances, despite nine points behind the leaders Liverpool.

The Gunners drew 1-1 with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, with Gabriel Martinelli opening the scoring and Pedro Neto saving a point for the home side.

While a draw at Chelsea is certainly nothing to be ashamed of, it is the sixth time Arsenal have dropped points in 11 Premier League matches and leaves them significantly behind in fourth.

Liverpool’s victory over Aston Villa, along with Manchester City’s defeat against Brighton, puts Arne Slot’s side five points clear at the top of the table, with a goal difference of +15, with their nearest rival near City at +9.

No team has overturned a nine-point deficit to win the Premier League at this stage of the season, the record being eight, but Owen believes Arsenal could be the team to do it.

The Liverpool hero was impressed with what he saw in the draw at Chelsea, but with Martin Odegaard returning from injury he believes they will start to put together a winning run after the international break.

“It’s nine points but it was a big step forward today and it was a good performance today,” Owen told Premier League Productions on Sunday. “It seems like they were back in business today, it was Arsenal Once again today, in recent weeks, it doesn’t really look like Arsenal. Creativity was not there.

“It’s nine points, yes, but it feels like their big players are coming back, the confidence is coming back. It looks to me like they’re going to start scoring points very soon.

Agreeing was Chelsea legend Lampard, who believes not only will Arsenal improve, but Liverpool will have a tough time of their own at some point.

“After a difficult series, I don’t think we should forget who they are and what they have built,” Lampard said of Arsenal. “Good team, they have a very good coach, a physical team, a strong team.

“Maybe there are a few points, the number 9 we’re talking about that teams usually need to win the league, an absolute number 9, they don’t have that option so much.

“But apart from that, it’s nine points for Liverpool, who don’t have that moment, that shot.” It might happen at some point for them, so they definitely shouldn’t give up on that hope.

Arsenal icon Ian Wright believes it has been a matter of injuries and suspensions so far this campaign and if Mikel Arteta can field the same team as on Sunday then success will come.

“You have to have that hope, but it probably kills you, that hope,” he said.

“The team was pretty solid. If we can take this team down, you have to be confident that they will be able to take it out and win some games.

Former Arsenal star Theo Walcott believes their hopes of glory are still alive, pointing out their run of matches has been difficult and Odegaard’s return from a serious ankle injury is huge news.

“The difference with Arsenal at the moment is that they are short of goals, while they are not conceding many – but at this stage of the season it is important to take into account who they have played,” said Walcott during the match of day 2. .

“I would say that, so far, they have faced tougher teams – they played six of last season’s top 10, and five of those games were away.

“Also, most of the time they were without their main player, Martin Odegaard, and they are still where they are.

“People tend to forget all that when they realize Arsenal aren’t playing at the same level as last year, but for me that’s one of the reasons not to write them off in the race in the title.”
