WILLARDS, Md- Ceramic Zone in Willards Maryland is a family-owned, paint-your-own pottery studio. Offering a wide assortment of options to tap into your artistic side. We caught up with owner Kim Jones who told us her story and lets you explore your creative side.

Jones told WMDT how the idea for the studio came about: “I always loved crafts, my mom always made ceramics. So both types of things made sense. So once I had the idea to do it. My mother helped me and it took off from there.

Offerings are constantly changing because locally owned stores can quickly adapt to new trends. By constantly adding new rooms and experiences for people, it provides a new challenge every time you stop. You can even bring your creations according to Jones “If you come with your design. Something on a piece of paper you can trace on a plate. And make it yours.

Jones tells us how the pieces take shape: “Well, everything we have starts with a cookie. So there’s no hand building that some people are looking for.” A little bisque will also affect the color painted on the surface. Jones says any color change you notice is nothing to worry about. “Three coats, even if I don’t varnish it, it will be shiny. So the red color will gradually turn pink. But when you put it at high temperature in the oven, it will turn a real red color.”

The heat helps bring out the colors in the room and give it that sparkly touch that will help it stand out. Jones tells us that not all parts are equal, although “the majority of what we have is considered low fire. It is still fired at over 1,800 degrees. But it’s food safe with the frosting we use. But it is not dishwasher, oven and microwave safe.

Jones says their core product will definitely bring some holiday cheer “Christmas trees are surprising. The interesting thing about Christmas trees is that we all have different styles and what we call tree paints. They’re all different colors that fit into the grooves of the trees.” With an extensive collection already on display, the variation in color and technique gives each one its own unique look. They even come with a set of lights to help warm up any room!

Jones says they welcome parties and large groups. All visits are by appointment only, to schedule one and according to their schedules. Discover their website.
