A brief clip of Firewatch’s Valley of the Gods follow-up looks incredible

Matthew Wilde, visual effects developer at Valve, recently shared a brief overview of the Campo Santo game In the Valley of the Godswhose development was suspended in 2019.

The six-second clip includes a first-person perspective of the archaeologist-like figure shown in the game’s only trailer as she and the player character move through a dark, water-filled cave toward a sunny outing.

You may remember Wilde’s name from his work on Half-life: Alyxparticularly the amazing shaders he created to simulate a realistic liquid inside the VR game’s many, many glass bottles.

“I often tend to work on liquid things – that’s the water test we did at Campo Santo before Valve moved,” Wilde explained alongside the new In the Valley of the Gods pictures.

In the Valley of the Gods was supposed to be Campo Santo’s sequel to the critically darling Fire monitoring. It was first revealed at The Game Awards in 2017 with a release window of 2019. The following year, the studio was acquired by Valve, and its team was integrated into projects like Half-life: Alyx And Dota Underlordswork that Campo Santo co-founder Jake Rodkin suggested banning development on In the Valley of the Gods. The game Steam page now indicates a December 2029 release date.
