UK’s largest Wetherspoon pub to get £750,000 renovation to expand | United Kingdom | News

The country’s largest Weatherspoon pub has closed its doors for a £750,000 refurbishment.

The Royal Victoria Pavilion in Ramsgate, with a capacity of up to 1,400 people, will be closed for a month after last orders were called last night.

The company took the lease of the historic Grade II listed building in 2017 and spent around £4.5 million making it the latest outlet for the popular pub chain.

The building, designed by architect Stanley Davenport Adshead in 1903, sat empty for nearly a decade before the chain moved in.

Before becoming a jewel in the Weatherspoon crown, the building had served as a nightclub and casino until 2008, but was hit by a serious fire in 2011.

Despite investing a considerable amount in transforming the space, the chain is now prepared to invest more money to extend the mezzanine to fill the entire first floor and lay down a custom carpet.

There are also plans for a new customer area to be installed at the rear of the building, extending onto Ramsgate seafront.

Pub manager Chris Whitbourn said: “Wetherspoon is spending £750,000 on the pub, which represents a substantial further investment in the area.

“My team and I look forward to welcoming guests back to the Royal Victoria Pavilion in December, and we are confident they will be impressed by the renovation.”

The site is often considered one of the best of over 800 Wetherspoon pubs across the UK.

Earlier this year the pub was voted Wetherspoon’s second best, narrowly missing out on the crown ahead of The Bishop Blaize, Manchester.

Over the past decade, the chain has become a much-loved part of British culture, with fans attracted by its low prices and eye-catching locations.

The pub is expected to be closed for up to a month before reopening its doors in early December.
