Family and friends gather to honor 18-year-old who died while working to contain Greenwood Lake wildfire

Family and friends of Dariel Vasquez gathered at Ramapo High School Monday to remember the 18-year-old who died over the weekend while working to contain the Greenwood Lake wildfire.

Vasquez was a 2024 graduate of Ramapo High School and had been on the varsity baseball team since his freshman year. He became captain of the East Ramapo Titans as a senior and even won an award that year for being a student-athlete.

His teammates and his coach remember him on and off the field.

“It was tough, he was just a great kid,” said baseball coach Chris Landry, who has a photo with Vasquez when he won an award his senior year for being a student-athlete. “He was a team player. He did whatever it took for the team and it was amazing. He was a great kid.”

News 12 received dozens of photos and videos from those who knew him.

The team returned to the diamond Monday with Vasquez’s family and other friends.

They released balloons numbering seven, which was his jersey number.

Vasquez has worked with the state Parks Department and at Shoprite in Garnerville.
