A 19-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide in Mumbai after being harassed by her 23-year-old boyfriend; the police filed a complaint against him.

MUMBAI: After a 19-year-old girl, who was pursuing a B.SC (IT) course at a college in Worli, allegedly committed suicide on October 17 at a state government-run hostel in Chembur, the Chembur police registered a case against her 23-year-old boyfriend for allegedly harassing and assaulting her, which led to the extreme measure.

The girl’s family claimed that due to alleged harassment by the accused, who works in a private company, she committed suicide. He allegedly stalked her for the past eight months, which always made her tense.

The girl had ended her life at the Chembur hostel and her classmates suspected something was wrong when she did not open her room door.

Chembur police said they arrested the boyfriend, who resides in Mankhurd, under sections 352 (insult intended to provoke breach of peace), 115 (2) (voluntarily causing hurt) and 108 (abetment to suicide). ) by Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The case was registered based on a complaint filed by the father of the deceased.

“The family said the deceased had told her younger sister that she was in a relationship with a 23-year-old Mankhurd resident from her native district in Maharashtra,” a police officer said. The police officer also said that the deceased allegedly harbored suicidal thoughts due to the harassment she faced.
