Petaluma’s Veterans Day Parade is ‘rain or shine’

Here’s what you need to know about Monday’s parade and other Veterans Day events.

Residents who impatiently awaited Monday’s 1 p.m. Veterans Day Parade and Flyover We can be assured that even if the morning showers continue beyond midday, there will still be a parade.

“We’re ready, rain or shine,” parade organizer Joe Noriel said in response to an early morning question from the Argus-Courier about the weather. He added: “It’s supposed to clear up. Fingers crossed! »

The theme of Petaluma’s annual celebration is “A Salute to the Coast Guard” and, according to tradition, will include various events before and after the massive procession through downtown Petaluma.

Music by Jonathan Parnell and Friends begins at noon, in the Walnut Park Gazebo, with the parade departing at 1 p.m., then returning to the gazebo at 2:45 p.m. for a post-parade program of prayers and speeches.

Highlights of the parade itself include the appearance of several members of Military Women Across America Unit 77, as grand marshals, and the ceremonial flyby of a Huey helicopter and other military gear. Parade announcers will be stationed in front of the Petaluma Museum, Putnam Plaza and the Hideaway Bar.

Street closures will be in effect to accommodate the event, with the Petaluma Police Department posting the following advisory:

“Even if you are used to seeing Henry One flying over Sonoma County, you may not be used to seeing military aircraft in the area. Please note that several units will be flying over Petaluma in honor of Veterans Day.

Police added that “these planes are expected and are not a cause for concern.” We would also like to remind our community that a number of roads will be closed downtown to accommodate the parade.
