‘It’s still a fight’: Hugh Freeze on current status of kicker Alex McPherson

Special teams has been a roller coaster for Auburn football this season and things are still uncertain with kicker Alex McPherson.

McPherson made his season debut against Kentucky after missing the first seven games of the season while recovering from a gastrointestinal illness. However, he was sidelined last week against Vanderbilt.

Head coach Hugh Freeze addressed the situation surrounding McPherson and said he’s unsure of the timeline as to when he’ll be ready.

“I didn’t get a report from him (Monday),” Freeze said. “I don’t know, we left him free on Saturday and Sunday. But it was still a struggle for him last Friday because he was unable to train. I’m not sure where it stands this week.

Freshman Kicker Towns McGough is 5-for-12 on field goals this season. After missing two against Vanderbilt, Freeze talked about the plan moving forward with McGough and if four-man territory is an option in some precedents.

“Not getting points when we had good practices that should result in points is definitely a momentum killer,” Freeze said. “They really hurt. Who knows what happens instead? Towns has been really good on kickoffs, and they start at the 25 instead of the 35 or 30.”

“The positional play on the field, whether they score or not, has been reversed. In the Vandy game, they reversed it. This is what happens when we don’t score points after a really good practice. So, we definitely need to start taking this into account. Is it four-down territory, and at what start in the game is it four-down territory? »

Auburn returns to Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday to host ULM at 11:45 a.m. and will be televised on the SEC Network.
