Amid threats of protests, Brampton’s Triveni Temple cancels consular event

Ottawa:

Facing fears of an “extremely high level of violent protests”, Brampton’s Triveni Mandir and Community Center has canceled a certificate of life event.

The event, a consular camp, was scheduled to take place on November 17, where Hindus and Sikhs of Indian origin could renew their essential life certificates.

The temple administration issued a statement on Monday saying, “Please note that the life certificate event scheduled at Brampton Triveni Mandir by the Indian Consulate on November 17, 2024 has been canceled. This is due to official intelligence from Peel Regional Police stating that there is an extremely high and imminent threat level of violent protests.

Authorities apologized to community members, saying: “We apologize to all members of the community who depended on the event. We are deeply saddened that Canadians now do not feel safe coming to Hindu temples in Canada. »

“We call on Peel Police to respond to the threats circulating against Brampton Triveni Mandir and provide security guarantees to the Canadian Hindu community and the general public,” the temple administration added.

Brampton Triveni Mandir and Community Center is a spiritual place where all Hindus and like-minded people gather to participate in Puja, Kirtan, Sewa and Pravachan.

On November 3, an Indian consular camp located at the Hindu Sabha temple in Brampton, near Toronto, witnessed a “violent disturbance.” The incident sparked widespread criticism in Canada and abroad.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the “deliberate attack” on a Hindu temple in Canada and said the “cowardly attempts at intimidation” by Indian diplomats were appalling and that New Delhi expects Canadian authorities to ensure justice and respect the rule of law.

“I strongly condemn the deliberate attack on a Hindu temple in Canada. Equally appalling are the cowardly attempts to intimidate our diplomats. Such acts of violence never weaken India’s resolve. We expect this May the Canadian government ensure justice and uphold the rule of law,” Prime Minister Modi said on X.

Relations between India and Canada deteriorated sharply after Canadian leaders made allegations without providing evidence of an assassination on their soil.
