‘Peril!’ Writers attack Ken Jennings – see how he reacted

(Warning: The following contains MAJOR spoilers for the Monday, November 11 episode of Danger!)

Danger! fans were waiting for a “dominant” new champion in the Monday, November 11, episode and a hilarious joke from the host’s shady clue writers. Ken Jennings costs. The host just can’t catch a break regarding his low point – or rather “hoe” – from his contestant days.

Rachel Marcus, a writer and consultant from New York, signed up as one-day champion with winnings of $20,600 after a thriller match that some dubbed the “best game of 2024.” She competed against Chris Spencer, a medical writer from Washington, D.C., and Joey DeSena, a development engineer from Raleigh, North Carolina.

In danger! In the round, DeSena took a lead when he selected the $200 “All A Board” clue, which involved different types of boards. Jennings read the photo clue: “This is the delicious promotional item used here.” The screen showed a stock photo of a man holding a “sandwich tray” – the correct answer. But instead of a special lunch, the board (below) said: “What is a hoe?”

This playful jab was a reference to Jennings’ famous “hoe/rake” confusion during his 74-game winning streak in 2004. Jennings laughed as he called out to DeSena, who correctly responded, “Sandwich platter?” Jennings pulled himself together and replied, “That’s right; this sandwich panel gives me flashbacks. The player and the audience burst into laughter.

Meanwhile, DeSena was no joke in terms of gameplay, and at the end of the round he led with $9,200, Marcus had $2,600, and Spencer had $2,000. Jennings remarked, “Joey has a big lead. »

In Double Jeopardy!, DeSena continued to put on a clinic, finding and succeeding in both Daily Doubles consecutively. He added $3,200 to the “NO”. 1 BESTSELLER THIS YEAR” searching for “Handyman, Tailor, Soldier, Spy”. But he only bet $1,000 on the index “CAPITALS OF THE MEXICAN STATES” despite a large lead. So even though he knew that it was “Yucitan”, he didn’t really put the game aside Before Final Jeopardy, it led to. $18,200, Spencer at a respectable $9,400, Marcus just behind at $8,000.

The clue to “19th CENTURY AMERICA” was: “It caused great amusement that the name of this President, whose wife did not allow dancing, was similar to that of a dance. It was a triple problem because no one found the correct answer of “Polk”. As Jennings explains, “Polk didn’t know polka.” Joey only lost $703 to win and become the new champion with $17,497.

Fans flooded the Reddit thread for the episode, enjoying the show for the unexpected but still happy to throw dirt at Jennings, and imagining big things for the new champion after competing in 3/3 of the daily doubles.

“Thanks to the What is a Hoe sandwich panel, the producers will literally take any opportunity to troll Ken with this and I love it!” the top comment has been read.

“This clue just aired for me and I couldn’t stop laughing,” another fan wrote.

“Can anyone explain the joke?” I don’t remember,” wrote a third.

“Legendary response from Ken during his race,” wrote a fourth, linking to the YouTube video (below):

“I know it’s early but I think Joey could be at least a 4 day champ,” a fifth wrote in the Reddit thread. “He dominated for the most part.”

“Every day is different from the next,” wrote a fourth, saying it was too early to follow, and emphasizing his conservative DD3 bet. “Different topics, different competitors – unless someone totally demolishes the competition, it’s pretty hard to get much out of a single game. And, FWIW, Joey hasn’t particularly maximized his DD opportunities – yet once it could have just been the categories.

“I wonder if there’s going to be a lot of dislike for this FJ,” wrote a fifth. I think it’s fun and a little silly. This is a challenge because you might overlook it even though you can easily remember the president during this time period.

“I got it but had to take a break so I wouldn’t have gotten it in time as I was going back from McKinley and considering both first and last name,” wrote a sixth .

“Much better than 3 Musketeers, I think it was a really good movie that could be made in 30 seconds honestly,” wrote another.

What did you think of the game? Does Joey DeSena have the makings of a multi-day champion? And did you get the “hoe/rake” reference from Ken Jennings? Let us know in the comments section below!
