The Devuthani Ekadashi of the Kartik month holds special significance for devotees of Khatu Shyam Ji, marking not his Janmotsav (birthday) but his Patotsav, the festival celebrating the installation of Shyam Baba’s idol in the temple.

Traditionally, Patotsav means the day when the idol was consecrated, or Pran Pratishtha, bringing divine presence into the statue. However, over time, devotees began observing it as Shyam Baba’s birthday, making it an annual devotional celebration.

HOW THE DAY IS CELEBRATED

On this auspicious day, the Khatu Shyam Ji temple is adorned with vibrant flowers and the idol of Baba Shyam is ceremonially bathed in fragrant perfumes. Devotees from across India gather with colorful Nishans (flags) in their hands, chanting ‘Shyam Baba Ki Jai’ and ‘Khatu Naresh Ki Jai’.

TRADITIONAL AND BHOG OFFER

Devotees offer a special bhog which includes Baba’s favorite items like raw cow’s milk, kheer churma and mawa peda. Additionally, a mava cake is offered to Shyam Baba as part of the celebrations.

Devotees wish Baba a “happy birthday” and some even cut cakes in his honor at the temple.

CELEBRATION BEYOND THE TEMPLE

Outside the temple, local hotels and dharamshalas host Shyam Janmotsav programs, where devotees gather to cut cakes and offer prayers.

Prasad stores in the area offer a variety of cakes and sweets for the occasion, allowing devotees to participate in this festive spirit.

This annual celebration is a heartfelt tribute to Khatu Shyam Ji, symbolizing faith, dedication and unity among his disciples.
