Brampton Temple cancels consular event for Indian-origin Hindus, Sikhs citing security concerns

THE Brampton Triveni Mandir and Community Center canceled its upcoming Life Certificate event citing security concerns and fear of violent protests from pro-Khalistan groups, reported The Indian Express.

The consular camp, scheduled for November 17, has been organized to help Hindus and Sikhs of Indian origin renew their essential life certificates.

This happens a few days later demonstrations by pro-Khalistan groups erupted during the Indian High Commission’s routine consular camp organized in partnership with the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton on November 3.

In a statement released Monday, temple administration announced that the Nov. 17 event was canceled “due to official intelligence from Peel Regional Police indicating that there is an extremely high and imminent threat level of violent demonstrations.

The temple expressed its regrets to the community.

“We apologize to all members of the community who depended on the event,” it read. “We are deeply saddened that Canadians no longer feel safe visiting Hindu temples in Canada. »

The temple authorities also urged the law enforcement agencies to act on the intelligence received. “We are calling on Peel Police to respond to the threats circulating against Brampton Triveni Mandir and provide security guarantees to the Canadian Hindu community and the general public.”

The city of Brampton witnessed sectarian violence last week after pro-Khalistan protesters from the separatist group Sikhs for Justice disrupted the November 3 consular event.

Sikhs for Justice is led by separatist leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun and is banned in India under the Prevention of Unlawful Activities Act.

Since 2021, Sikhs for Justice has held several unofficial “referenda” in foreign countries, including Canada, on whether a separate Sikh homeland should be separated from India.

Peel police have arrested four people, including a member of Sikhs for Justice, in connection with the November 3 violence.

Earlier, the Indian High Commission in Canada said it would cancel or postpone these consular events due to the Peel Police advisory.

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown plans to introduce a motion to city council this week to ban protests outside places of worship.

Brown told Toronto Star: “I presented a motion which will be voted on. I hope it will be adopted unanimously, banning demonstrations in places of worship.

In the meantime, Pannon threatened to attack Hindu temples, including the Ram mandir in Ayodhya, on November 16 and 17, India today reported Monday.

“We will shake the foundations of Ayodhya, the birthplace of the violent ideology of Hindutva,” Pannun can be heard saying in a video released by Sikhs for Justice.

These developments come amid a diplomatic row between India and Canada. Tensions between New Delhi and Ottawa escalated after the Canadian government alleged the involvement of Indian government agents in the killing of another Sikh separatist leader, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, near Vancouver in June 2023.

Nijjar was a supporter of Khalistan and the leader of the Khalistan Tiger Force, designated as a terrorist group in India.
