Ken Holland named consultant to NHL hockey operations department

NEW YORK — Former Detroit Red Wings and Edmonton Oilers general manager Ken Holland has joined the NHL’s hockey operations department as a consultant.

The league announced the new role of the Hockey Hall of Fame on Tuesday.

Holland spent 27 years as an NHL general manager, 22 of which were in Detroit.

He helped the Red Wings win the Stanley Cup as assistant general manager in 1997, then three more (1998, 2002, 2008) after being promoted to general manager.

He spent the previous five seasons as president of hockey operations and general manager of the Oilers, helping the team reach the Stanley Cup Final last season. He agreed to part ways with the club when his contract expired after the Cup final.

Holland, of Vernon, British Columbia, was part of Canada’s leadership team for its gold medals at the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a builder in 2020.

“We are thrilled to welcome Ken to NHL hockey operations, where he will provide invaluable insight into his decades in the game as a player, scout and executive,” said Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations of the NHL, Colin Campbell, in a press release. “It offers unparalleled expertise in a wide range of areas.”
