11 Best Foundations for Acne Prone Skin and Breakouts in 2024

Evaluate the ingredients

Dermatologist Allyson Brockman-Bitterman, MD, recommends starting by choosing products labeled “non-comedogenic.” Although the FDA doesn’t regulate this beauty claim, the proof is in the pudding: You may need to try a few foundations and read expert reviews (hi, it’s us). Other terms to search for? “Oil-free”, “won’t clog pores” or something like that.

It’s also a good idea to check the ingredients list. Some makeup products contain amazing acne-fighting MVPs that brighten, exfoliate, and unclog your pores while camouflaging your breakouts—without salicylic acid, niacinamide, vitamin C, and more. As for what to avoid? “Certain ingredients have been shown to be comedogenic and should be avoided,” says Dr. Brockman-Bitterman. The ones in question are acetylated lanolin, petroleum jelly, coconut oil, and sodium laurel sulfate, all ingredients that can clog pores and trigger acne.

Consider your skin type

“Choosing the right foundation for your skin can also prevent future breakouts,” says Dr. Brockman-Bitterman, adding that using acne medications can often be drying, so it’s best to choose a foundation liquid or cream foundation if that suits you. As for the other end of the spectrum, oily skin types may do better with a mattifying, powder or mineral option.

Supplement your makeup routine with a good skincare routine

Concealing your acne works best if you develop a good skin hygiene routine. The best way to do it? “Removing makeup before bed and using clean applicators are two ways to ensure your skin routine doesn’t lead to an increase in skin bacteria that can also lead to breakouts,” says Dr. Brockman-Bitterman. Likewise, choosing a cleanser that isn’t too irritating and matches your skin type will also reduce your risk of breakouts, she says.
