Pittston gets $4 million for downtown while proposed Back Mountain sports dome and hotel receive funding – Wilkes-Barre Citizens’ Voice

Local lawmakers recently announced tens of millions of dollars in grants for their districts, none larger in Luzerne County than the $4 million promised to the city of Pittston for a four-story building that will include a car park with commercial and residential units and potentially a new supermarket.

The grant announcement also revealed two major proposed projects in Back Mountain, a new sports dome on the Luzerne County Fairgrounds in Lehman Township. and a proposed hotel in Dallas Township.

One of the more unique grants was $68,289 for a robotic lawn mower to maintain a railroad right-of-way along 55 miles of railroad track that serves Grimes Industrial Park, Hanover Industrial Park and other users located along rail lines in Luzerne and Lackawanna counties.

Pittston Mayor Mike Lombardo said the $4 million is the largest state grant the city has ever received.

The development of the former Quinn’s Supermarket, which includes an outdoor promenade, is part of the $40 million “Market & Main/The New American Theater” project that will include a 500-seat theater and another mixed-use floor of six eight stories high. -use building including retail space, offices and residential accommodation.

“We’re very excited about it. We work hard to position our projects with our state representatives, state senators, the governor and those at the federal level. They see the value in our projects. We have a long history of delivering shovel-ready projects,” Lombardo said. “There aren’t many places that have done the magnitude that we have done and stayed the course, it will be 16 years, when it comes to taxes.”

Lombardo said city officials are considering attracting a supermarket to the first floor of the parking lot, which would feature solar panels on the roof and electric charging stations inside. A green space with perhaps a small dog park will be built between the garage and the theater complex at Main and Market streets.

“It actually swallows up an entire city block,” Lombardo said.

Recent grant funding comes from the Local Share Account (LSA) from casino gaming revenue and the Redevelopment Capital Investment Program (RACP) through the Office of the Budget for Design, Acquisition and the construction of regional economic, cultural, civic and recreational infrastructure. , and historic improvement projects.

Some other notable grants include:

Sports dome at the fair

Dallas Area Fall Fair Inc. was awarded a $1,492,000 grant to help build “a brand new sports dome complex located on an unused area of the (Luzerne County Fairgrounds) complex” along State Road 118 in Lehman Township.
