‘Worst 911 call I’ve ever heard’: Former sheriff’s deputy sentenced to 50 years to life in Dublin double murder

A former Santa Rita Prison corrections officer, behind bars at his former workplace for more than two years, is expected to be transferred to state prison for a sentence of 50 years to life in prison for the murder of a couple from Dublin in 2022.

Tears from the victims’ family flowed in the East County Hall of Justice during the sentencing hearing Tuesday morning for former Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Devin Williams Jr. . as the accused sat flanked by his two lawyers with his own family members in tears behind him during a round of victim impact statements.

The conviction comes after a jury convicted Williams of double murder for breaking into the home of Benison and Maria Tran, the latter with whom Williams was romantically involved, and shooting the couple with his gun on duty before fleeing the scene and throwing away the weapon on September 7, 2022. Two members of the couple’s family – their then 14-year-old child and Maria Tran’s mother – faced their final bloody moments when police from the same agency Williams had worked for arrived on the scene.

“I cannot forgive you for what you did to my parents,” said the couple’s son, now 16, whose identity has not been made public, in a letter read Tuesday morning by prosecutor Ted McGarvey. “They didn’t deserve this and I don’t deserve to lose them because of your actions.” I will carry this pain, this agony all my life.

In his brief remarks near the end of the hearing, Williams said he would never forgive himself either.

“I recognize the pain and trauma I caused,” Williams said. “No apology will ease this, but just know that I am truly sorry. I don’t expect forgiveness because I will never forgive myself.

While Williams’ attorneys argued that their client should receive concurrent sentences for the two deaths, Judge Jennifer Madden disagreed with their assessment, sentencing Williams to two consecutive terms of 25 years to life, totaling 50 years to life.

“There are some things that do not deserve the compassion and mercy that your attorneys are asking me to impose at this time,” Madden said.

Madden noted that despite years of experience as a judge and lawyer, the circumstances of Williams’ murder of Trans were particularly gruesome, calling it “execution.”

“That you would commit these acts is truly unthinkable,” Madden told Williams. “I will tell you that I have had a lot of trials, I have been in a lot of cases both as a judge and as an attorney, and the level of violence that was implemented in this case – the 911 call was the worst 911 call I have ever heard in a case.

Williams returned to the custody of the Sheriff’s Office after the hearing and before his prison sentence began. He receives credit for 917 days served during the time he was incarcerated as part of the legal proceedings in this case.
