College Football Playoff Top 25: Second 2024 CFP Rankings Revealed

The first reveal of the College Football Playoff Top 25 last week set the tone for the playoff race, which quickly took a turn after multiple upsets. Today, the latest insight into what the selection committee thinks of the contending teams becomes clear as rankings shift and paths shift.

In the first year of the new format, the four highest-ranked conference champions will receive the top four seeds, granting them a bye into the quarterfinals hosted at one of the New Years Six Bowl venues . The remaining eight nominations will be filled by seven at-large qualifiers and the fifth highest-ranked conference champion. The higher ranked teams will host the lower ranked teams in the first round.

For these reasons, the College Football Playoff Top 25 does not necessarily reflect the final bracket.

Now, 11 weeks into the season, here’s how the selection committee ranked the top 25 teams with a chance to earn their spot in the new 12-team College Football Playoff.

1. Oregon (Big Ten)

The Ducks lead the way among undefeated teams with just four remaining and have faced the toughest schedule in this group with wins over Ohio State and Boise State so far. Dan Lanning’s group has a clear path to the Big Ten title game and a potential No. 1 overall seed that hasn’t changed.

Upcoming schedule: at Wisconsin, against Washington

2. Ohio State

Upcoming schedule: at Northwestern, vs. Indiana, vs. Michigan

3. Texas (SEC)

After suffering a loss to Georgia, Texas was able to bounce back with wins. After seeing the Bulldogs suffer a second loss, the Longhorns return to the top of the SEC standings with a shot at securing a first-round bye.

Upcoming schedule: at Arkansas, against Kentucky, at Texas A&M

After starting the season 7-0, Penn State lost a home game to Ohio State, which could have paved the way for an appearance in the Big Ten title game. With a bounce-back win under their belt, the rest of the schedule still offers James Franklin’s squad a path to its first CFP appearance.

Upcoming Schedule: At Purdue, Minnesota vs. Maryland

5. Indiana

The surprise story of college football, first-year coach Curt Cignetti kept his promise to win at Indiana by entering the final month undefeated. The Hoosiers sit atop the Big Ten standings alongside Oregon while controlling their own destiny in a matchup at Ohio State. Another test was also passed without issue on Saturday against Michigan.

7.Tennessee

After escaping several SEC games with wins, including a rivalry win over Alabama, the Volunteers overcame the road loss to Arkansas and asserted themselves back into the SEC conversation. Upcoming schedule: vs. Virginia, vs. Army, at USC

10.Alabama

Upcoming schedule: vs. Mercer, at Oklahoma, vs. Auburn

11. Old Miss

After sitting on the wrong side of the bubble in the first College Football Playoff rankings, Ole Miss jumped into the conversation by eliminating Georgia. Lane Kiffin’s team now appears to be firmly in the race for a playoff spot in the crowded bubble bracket.
