Scientists discover underwater ‘volcano’ while working with Coast Guard

(CNN) – Scientists have discovered an underwater volcano-like feature during Coast Guard-assisted operations off the coast of Alaska.

The U.S. Coast Guard cutter called Healy just completed the first two phases of the 2024 Arctic fall icebreaker deployment on Sunday.

Its crew and researchers have carried out several scientific and seabed mapping missions.

The Coast Guard said its work led to the discovery of what is described as an underwater volcano-like feature during the first phase.

The feature, rising 500 meters from the seafloor, lies approximately 1,600 meters below the surface at its shallowest depth.

The team then discovered a possible gas plume rising from this feature to near the water surface.
