Victoria Derbyshire must ask the same thing four times as she skewers MP | Television and radio | Showbiz and television

BBC Newsnight became embarrassing when Victoria Derbyshire was forced to ask the same question four times as she skewered an MP over the assisted dying bill.

Victoria was leading a debate on the controversial bill with Edinburgh West Lib Dem MP Christine Jardine – who appeared evasive to her questions.

During the discussion, Victoria asked: “How do you know if someone has been coerced?” as Jardine responded: “We’re talking about people here who are in a heartbreaking situation, and the doctors have taken care of them – they’ve had treatment and diagnosis.

“They need to have a terminal diagnosis with a wait of about six months at most. They will know this person, they will have medical knowledge, and they will be trained to deal with people and read if they are open with them.

Interrupting him, Victoria insisted: “Forgive me, forgive me. The question is how do you know if someone has been coerced?

Jardine said: “It’s something they hope to challenge, they will look at the person…”

But Victoria wasn’t happy: “Forgive me, doctors aren’t trained in coercive control, are they?” So how would they know if someone was coerced?

“The impetus for this change in the law comes from people in this position,” Christine said. Victoria told him: “I’m not asking you where that came from. That’s the answer to a different question. I come back to my question: how would we know if the patient was coerced? »

When Jardine suggested that the patient’s sincerity mattered, Victoria shook her head, asking: “Is that your criterion?” If they say it sincerely? Finally, she insisted that safeguards would be put in place if the bill passed.

Victoria argued, “Wait, wait. I thought this bill had the strongest safeguards in the world? Now you’re telling me there will be additional guarantees? There is no question of training in coercive control!
