Star of ITV’s Fun House now works at Wetherspoons after leaving TV | Television and radio | Showbiz and television

A star of beloved 1990s ITV game show Fun House is now working at Wetherspoons after ditching fame.

Melanie Grant, now 51, was one half of the twin blonde cheerleaders who helped welcome Pat Sharp to the program.

The original quiz show was more renowned for its chaotic go-kart races and deluges of gunge than its trivia questions. But fans who were kids back then can now, as adults, enjoy a nostalgic surprise when they step into the UK’s largest Wetherspoons.

Melanie says her boss at the Royal Victoria Pavilion pub in Ramsgate, Kent, was completely impressed when he realized her identity from her CV.

She said: “I love working at the pub. It’s perfect for me as I grew up here and I’m a real people person and I always enjoy chatting to the customers here.

“Many customers know and recognize me from the show, and we have lots of laughs and memories.”

Before becoming Wetherspoons’ flagship – the country’s largest which opened in 2017 – the venue had a vibrant nightclub past, known to many as Peggy Sue’s and then Nero’s.

Mélanie, a local resident, continues: “I came here at the time, so I have a very strong connection with the building.”

Pub boss Chris Whitbourn said: “Having Mel here is superb. I used to watch Fun House when I was a kid and then found myself interviewing her for a job here. She is an excellent member of staff and an asset to the pub.”

Melanie and her twin sister Martina became celebrities on the fondly remembered ITV show when they were 16.

The iconic program, which featured young candidates taking on challenges in the famous performance hall, to the enthusiastic welcome of alumni BBC Radio 1 DJ Pat Sharp – with his distinctive mullet – captivated young audiences from 1989 to 1999.
