Slack working on AI-powered file summarization feature to improve productivity

The new AI-powered file summary feature is designed to help users understand the main points of long documents without having to read them in their entirety. Based on a recent teardown of the Slack Android app APK, evidence of this functionality was discovered in the app’s code. Depending on the results, the feature will be offered in a separate section where users can upload files for quick summaries.

Once implemented, summaries will be shareable, allowing users to send them in conversations or to other team members. However, users will also have the option to disable the summary before sharing it. Although the feature looks promising, some limitations have been noted. For example, if a file is too large or does not contain enough text to summarize, the AI will not be able to generate a summary. Additionally, password-protected files and some file formats may not be supported at first, with formats like PDF, Word, and Text being likely candidates.
