Georgia oyster industry gets boost as Glynn County proposes mariculture zone for sustainable agriculture

GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) — A new opportunity for Georgia’s oyster industry is underway.
Glynn County will hold a public meeting to discuss a proposed mariculture zone. Proposal aims to boost sustainable oyster farming

More oysters could soon be making waves in the Coastal Empire, with a new mariculture area in the works for Glynn County, but before that happens, the Georgia DNR is asking for your input.

Imagine a thriving oyster farm right in the heart of Glynn County, according to the Georgia DNR it could soon become a reality. They will hold a meeting today to discuss a proposed oyster mariculture area on Jointer Creek.

The Coastal Resources Division (CRD) will present details on the 31-acre area, which will include individual leases. Each individual lease is 7.5 acres in size and the CRD plans to space the leases 100 feet apart, leaving a 100-foot-wide center channel to ensure easy navigation routes for boats. The area is part of Georgia’s ongoing efforts to support sustainable oyster farming, which benefits both the environment and local economies.

The meeting will take place at 5 p.m. at the Coastal Resources Division’s Susan Shipman Environmental Learning Center in Brunswick. For those who cannot attend, a public comment period will be open from November 14 to 29. Written comments may be submitted by mail or online.

The project is a step toward growing Georgia’s oyster industry while balancing environmental conservation. The future of Georgia’s oyster industry could be shaped by your contribution, read more Click here.
