Red Lobster brings back a beloved menu item we’ve been missing

Damola Adamolekun, the 35-year-old new CEO of Red Lobster, has a plan to bring the chain out of bankruptcy. A top priority? Bringing back the restaurant’s fan favorite hushpuppies.

But hushpuppies alone won’t save the struggling channel. The young CEO has a big task ahead of him – and he can’t wait to take the job. In an interview with CNNAdamolekun explained that he admired the chain’s significance as “the first truly successful casual dining chain in America at scale.” Despite his youth, Adamolekun has already found success running casual dining restaurant chains. In 2020, he took over as CEO of PF Chang’s and helped guide the chain through the pandemic. He will need this experience in his new job, because Red Lobster appears to be on the verge of bankruptcy.

As one of his first moves at Red Lobster, Adamolekun plans to pare down the existing menu while adding a few new options. True to its respect for the chain’s history, Adamolekun’s new menu reintroduces beloved classics. Besides the hush puppies, he plans to revamp the chain’s tartar sauce to taste more like the original recipe.

It’s unclear when the Hushpuppies will return, but they’re sure to cause some noise when they do. “A few years ago there was an uproar on social media over the fact that we removed the Hush Puppies. So it’s coming back,” he added. Adamolekun said TODAYjoking, “I expect a stampede in our restaurants because we’re bringing back the quiet puppies.” It looks like TODAY show co-host Al Roker will be first in line. “I stopped going to Red Lobster because they stopped the silent puppies,” Roker said.

A fan favorite that probably won’t return? The chain’s famous endless shrimp. Red Lobster introduced the promotion during the pandemic to boost sales, but it caused chaos in kitchens and servers. Apparently, the endless shrimp was not financially viableeither. “I know how to do math,” Adamolekun told TODAY. However, he told CNN it wasn’t a resounding no. “I never mean never, but certainly not in the way it was done.” If it’s not endless shrimp, rumors are circulating about Red Lobster trying an endless lobster – even if it seems financially more difficult to make than shrimp.
