Columbus Mayor Ginther says Trump’s mass deportation plan won’t help

play

Columbus Mayor Andrew J. Ginther dodged questions about President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday. promise to massively expel immigrants.

“Do I agree with mass evictions? Here’s the deal. I was mayor when Trump was president before. I’m not going to respond to every tweet, I’m not going to applaud every comment the president makes ” Ginther said. , who is also president of the United States Conference of Mayors.

Ginther said the city of Columbus values and embraces diversity. He made the comments while speaking at a press conference about his proposed operating budget.

Melanie Crabill, a spokesperson for Ginther, told The Dispatch after the event that Columbus and Ginther had already clearly expressed their position in 2017 When Trump was first elected, the city would not devote resources to hunting immigrants.

Ginther issued an executive order in 2017 that was later codified by the Columbus City Council, making it illegal to arrest or refuse services based on immigration status.

At that time, city leaders considered becoming a “sanctuary city” but ultimately decided against it, saying they did not want to make the city a target for Trump.

Trump said that once he takes office for the second time, he plans to deport millions of immigrants, including undocumented immigrants, which would address the nation’s housing shortage.

Ginther rejected the idea that it would help solve the housing crisis.

“I encourage the new administration to engage on the other side and work with America’s cities, federal legislators and state legislators to focus on solving the problem, by bringing more housing online, through opposition to an approach that, quite honestly, from everything I’ve said, heard from the business community to national experts, is really unworkable,” Ginther said.

Ginther said the nation’s mayors are not interested in a war with Trump and are eager to work with the president on solutions.
