Edmonton man charged after traffic stop leading to gun and cocaine possession

Mounties have charged an Edmonton man after a traffic stop near Hinton in October led to the seizure of drugs and a weapon.

RCMP said in a news release Wednesday that a roving traffic unit officer stopped a pickup truck on Highway 16 near Hinton around 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 23.

Police said that during the stop, the officer made observations that made him suspect the driver had illegal drugs in the car.

Police arrested the driver and deployed a police dog to search the vehicle for controlled substances. Police searched the truck and found a loaded handgun and 68 kilograms of cocaine..

The gendarmerie charged Ranjit Singh Sekhon, 36, from Edmonton, with:

  • Possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking
  • Unsafe storage of a firearm
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Possessing a firearm knowing that its possession is unauthorized
  • Possess a prohibited weapon
  • Possessing a firearm in a motor vehicle
  • Possess a restricted weapon without registration/license

Sekhon had a judicial bail hearing and appeared in court several times. He was remanded in custody until November 21, police said.
