Detroit News 2024 Big Ten Football Power Rankings: Week of November 10

Here are the Detroit News Football Power rankings for the week of November 10, 2024, with analysis by Angélique S. Chengelis.

No. 1 Oregon (10-0, 7-0): Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel threw for just a season-low 183 yards last week in a win at Maryland, but he also threw three touchdown passes to break the all-time record NCAA times for total touchdowns responsible. It now has 180 in total. The Ducks received 12 penalties, so they will have to clean up their act. Last week: 1

No. 2 Ohio State (8-1, 5-1 Big Ten): The Buckeyes beat Purdue last week for their second shutout of the season and now have lowly Northwestern at Wrigley Field. It’s just an appetizer before next week’s game against undefeated Indiana. Last week: 2

No. 3 Indiana (10-0, 7-0): Indiana improved to 10-0 with the win over Michigan for the best record in program history. The Hoosiers did not have their best performance in the second half but moved up in the CFP standings. Last week: 3

No. 4 Penn State (8-1, 5-1): The Nittany Lions overcame their disappointing loss to Ohio State and beat Washington 35-6. It looks like they will finish the regular season with three straight wins, starting at winless Purdue in conference play, then at Minnesota before returning home to Maryland. Last week: 4

No. 5 Illinois (6-3, 4-2): Illinois, once in the top 25, is coming off a roster and hosts Michigan State on Saturday. The Illini finish with three winnable games, including at Rutgers and Northwestern to end the regular season. Last week: 8

No. 6 Iowa (6-4, 4-3): Up, down, up, down. This appears to be the season for the Hawkeyes. They are coming off a 20-17 loss at UCLA and struggled offensively as running back Kaleb Johnson was held to 49 yards and quarterback Brendan Sullivan threw two interceptions. The Hawkeyes are off this weekend. Last week: 5

No. 7 Minnesota (6-4, 4-3): The Gophers had their four-game winning streak snapped last week against Rutgers, but the good news for them is that they are bowl eligible. Now they have a weekend off before hosting Penn State and finishing the regular season at Wisconsin. Last week: 6

No. 8 UCLA (4-5, 3-4): The Bruins are hot, hot, hot on a three-game winning streak, including a 20-17 victory over Iowa. They need two wins to become bowl eligible, and that seems possible, as they face Washington on Friday, then host USC and Fresno State. Last week: 12

No. 9 Washington (5-4, 3-3): It’s back to Pac-12 play for the Huskies who will face UCLA on Friday at Husky Stadium, then have the weekend before the regular season finale at Oregon. It’s a tough home stretch for the Big Ten newcomers, who suffered a 35-6 loss at Penn State in the White Out last weekend. Last week: 7

No. 10 Michigan (5-5, 3-4): The Wolverines’ defense played hard, especially in the second half, at Indiana and held the prolific offense to 20 points in the loss. Their offense, however, needs work. A lot, especially the offensive line. Last week: 9

No. 11 Wisconsin (5-4, 3-3): The Badgers were off last weekend to prepare for a little duck hunting on Saturday. They just lost 42-10 to Iowa and a win against Oregon at Camp Randall would be surprising, but it would be just the ticket to bowl eligibility. Last week: 11

No. 12 Nebraska (5-4, 2-4): The Cornhuskers head to USC this weekend with a new offensive coordinator in Dana Holgorsen, who takes over for Marcus Satterfield. Nebraska will look for improved production from freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola. Last week: 10

No. 13 USC (4-5, 2-5): This season isn’t going the way the Trojans hoped after their season-opening win, and now they’ve changed quarterbacks from Miller Moss to Jayden Maiava. He will have the chance to take USC to .500 at home against Nebraska. Last week: 15

No. 14 Rutgers (5-4, 2-4): Rutgers ended Minnesota’s four-game winning streak with a 26-19 victory last weekend and remains in the hunt for a bowl. Injuries have been tough on the Scarlet Knights this season and perhaps they will find a way to recover with at least one win in the last three games, against Maryland, Illinois and Michigan State. Last week: 17

No. 15 Michigan State (4-5, 2-4): The Spartans are coming off a bye and have three chances to get the two wins they need to be bowl eligible in Jonathan Smith’s first season. The last time they played, they lost 47-10 to Indiana after taking a 10-0 lead. MSU is at Illinois this weekend before facing Purdue and Rutgers at home. Last week: 13

No. 16 Maryland (4-5, 1-5): Maryland is coming off a 39-18 loss to number one Oregon and benefited from a slightly off game from the Ducks. The Terps host Rutgers this weekend then Iowa before traveling to Penn State for the regular season finale. It looks like a challenge to get two wins out of the last three. Last week: 16

No. 17 North West (4-5, 2-4): The Wildcats probably needed more than a bye to prepare for this weekend’s game against Ohio State. This game could get ugly but at least it’s at a nice venue (Wrigley Field). Last week: 14

No. 18 Purdue (1-8, 0-6): Did the Big Ten schedulers do it for Purdue this season? The Boilermakers are coming off a 45-0 loss to Ohio State and will face Penn State this weekend. After playing Michigan State, they face Indiana in the final. Brutal. Last week: 18.
