SCO calls for investigation after man allegedly had leg amputated by mistake

The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) is calling for an investigation after a Bloodvein First Nation member had his leg amputated by mistake.

The SCO says Jason Kennedy reportedly had his right leg amputated at Winnipeg’s Grace Hospital, but after coming out of surgery he discovered his left leg had been removed.

Reports indicate that Kennedy was admitted to Seven Oaks General Hospital on October 23 due to bleeding in his right foot. Following this, it was ordered to be amputated at Grace Hospital.

“I cannot even begin to comprehend how traumatic and devastating this experience is for Mr. Kennedy and his family,” said OCS Grand Chief Jerry Daniels. “I am calling on the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and the provincial government to conduct a thorough and comprehensive investigation into this disturbing and nightmarish error in so-called patient care.”

“Mr. Kennedy deserved the best that our health care system has to offer, including empathy and respect,” concluded Grand Chief Daniels. “The patient safety review currently underway cannot do much -something to make up for this serious mistake I hope this will serve as motivation for meaningful systemic change in health care and that we will all come together to truly improve health outcomes for First Nations citizens and all. who live in Manitoba.

The SCO states: “This horrific incident is another chapter in a story of inequity and systemic failings in health care delivery for First Nations. »

They are also calling on the government to conduct a formal public inquiry into the matter.
