Strands doesn’t get as much attention as its New York Times gaming siblings Word And Relationshipsbut it can be just as challenging and entertaining. Strands just came out of beta, so it’s now in the official New York Times Games app, which could bring it more fans. I discuss in depth the rules for strands in this story.

How to play NYT Strands

1. Use today’s topic to search for words related to that topic. Do you see one? Drag or click the letters in order. Double-click the last letter to submit your proposal. If you found a theme word, it will light up blue and stay that way.

2. The other words you find are considered clue words that give you hints about the topic words. Find three clue words (they must have at least four letters each) and the game will reward you by showing you a theme word. But if you can’t decipher it, find three more clue words and the game will highlight the letters of the theme word in order.

3. Hunting spangrama special theme word that covers the entire puzzle, although it can flow from top to bottom. It sums up the theme of the puzzle.

4. When you are finished, you will have used each letter on the chart in a topic word or spangram. Theme words fill the entire board and do not overlap.

Hint for today’s Strands puzzle

Today’s Strands theme is: Name of the game.

If that doesn’t help, here’s a hint: With a candlestick, in the veranda.

Clue words to unlock clues in the game

Your goal is to find hidden words that match the theme of the puzzle. If you’re stuck, find all the words you can. Every time you find three words of four or more letters, Strands will reveal one of the theme words. Here are the words I used to get these clues, but any words of four letters or more that you find will work:

  • HEAL, COPE, DENS, LUMPER, PEEK, KEEP, KEEP, SEARCH, STAR, RUSE, SHIM, CARD.

Answers to today’s Strands puzzle

These are the answers that are related to the theme. The goal of the puzzle is to find them all, including the spangram, a theme word that extends from one side of the puzzle to the other. When you have them all (initially I thought there were always eight, but I learned that the number can vary), every letter on the board will be used. Here are the non-spangram responses:

  • PLUM, GREEN, ORCHID, PEACOCK, MUSTARD, SCARLET

Today’s Strands spangram is SUSPICIOUS CLUES. To find it, start with the C which is three letters to the right on the top row and finish. (if you are used to the old version of the game, Dr. Orchid may be new to you — she was for me. Apparently she replaced Ms. White in 2016.)
