Myer cancels Christmas window unveiling amid protest threats

Myer’s annual Christmas window opening has been canceled after pro-Palestinian protesters planned to disrupt the event, claiming “there is no joy in genocide”.

The unveiling of the annual Bourke Street display was due to take place in front of children and their families in Melbourne’s CBD on Sunday.

Myer confirmed on Thursday that the event had been canceled due to the threat.

“In light of recent developments and to ensure the wellbeing and safety of customers and team members, we will no longer be hosting an event at Bourke Street Mall to unveil our Christmas displays,” said a Myer spokesperson.

“Myer’s Christmas windows have long symbolized joy and community, and we remain committed to providing a safe and positive experience for all visitors.

The windows will remain open from Sunday and will remain open until January 5, the spokesperson said.

The retailer’s decision came after protesters planned to disrupt the event, with organizers saying on social media: “Myer would like us to ‘share the joy’ this Christmas, but there is no joy in the genocide.

The protesters, demanding a free Palestine, planned to gather at the State Library with signs, banners and noisemakers, before heading to Bourke Street to disrupt the unveiling of Myer’s Christmas window display.

Their goal was to “disturb those who prefer to bury their heads in the capitalist machine rather than denouncing a genocide,” they said.
