$11 million grant to revitalize Oswego Port, promising to boost Micron operations

Eleven million dollars will revitalize the Port of Oswego, which executives say will play an important role in Micron’s operations in Central New York.

The money, announced by New York Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, comes from a grant from the Department of Transportation. It will help renovate aging infrastructure and prepare for the arrival of micron, including adding a new slide, improving security and replacing the port’s damaged warehouse.

“The Port of Oswego is a major gateway for industry throughout Upstate New York, and today it received a major boost to help the region grow” , said Senator Chuck Schumer.

A new warehouse will replace the aging 40,000 square foot warehouse built in the 1980s. In 2013, the warehouse was damaged in a storm and was repaired, but is underutilized. The new warehouse will be the first climate-controlled warehouse located in a Great Lakes port with rail, road and water access.

Senator Schumer says the funding will help the port better use its space – and will be a key resource to support Micron. The Micron project has recently come under scrutiny following President-elect Donald Trump’s victory in the November election. Mr. Trump, who called the CHIPS Act, which funds Micron’s New York facility, “so bad” and led to many concerns that the project may not come to fruition or be transferred to another State once he takes office.

The funding announcement comes days after the senator announced new funding for the Cortland and Onondaga County railroads, which he said will also help with the supply chain needed for Micron’s operations. The senator says he hopes to reach a final agreement between Micron and the Commerce Department before the end of the year.
