Edgaras Jucikas, 28, had to be rescued from a ditch near Littleport after his car overturned

An “extremely lucky” motorist who had to be rescued from a water-filled ditch in the Fens has been jailed for drink-driving.

Edgaras Jucikas, 28, of Beck Row, Suffolk, admitted drinking around four pints of beer before the accident in Westmoor Drove on June 14.

A witness told police he saw Jucikas’ car leave the road and roll into the ditch, where it was discovered overturned and partially submerged.

He admitted drink-driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, breaching his community order, failing to turn up – and having a Class C licence.

On Monday, Norwich magistrates sentenced Jucikas to four years in prison and he was banned from driving for four and a half years.

Cambridgeshire Police operate a confidential 24/7 helpline to report drivers suspected of being drink or drugged.

Police said they carried out a roadside breath test after the crash and Jucikas issued 75, just over double the legal limit of 35 micrograms per 100ml of breath.

PC Baillie Morgan-Heritage said: “Jucikas is extremely lucky to be here today.

“Had it not been for a member of the public seeing his vehicle leave the road, he could have ended up in the ditch without anyone knowing or being able to call for help.

“Alcohol consumption affects your reaction time, vision and ability to concentrate. As Jucikas demonstrated, drunk drivers put their lives at risk by getting behind the wheel, not to mention the lives of others road users.”
