Neville, Keane and Carragher disagree over referee’s future in ill-timed episode of The Overlap

David Coote’s future has been discussed by the experts on The overlapwho were all against his ‘cancellation’ after the Premier League referee called Jurgen Klopp a ‘German asshole’.

Coote was suspended by the PGMOL following the clip, in which he also called “Liverpool shit”, and while that wasn’t enough for Gary Neville et al. to suggest he should be banned from officiating, the episode was filmed before another video was revealed on Wednesday.

Coote was filmed sniffing white powder during Euro 2024 in video sent by ‘friend’ has The Suninciting The overlap to post the following disclaimer: “Please note that this episode was recorded on Tuesday, November 12, 2024. Events and developments after this date may not be reflected in the discussion.”

Here is the full transcript of the discussion between Jamie Carragher, Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Jill Scott and Ian Wright:

JC: Look, he had a nightmare and I don’t see how he will be able to referee in England again.

IW: We say he should have deleted it, but if he had we wouldn’t have known what he thought of Jurgen.

RK: So what did he say? Did he criticize Klopp? Don’t you think other referees do it privately and think about it? They have to chat with their friends, it has obviously just been filmed. But if he thinks that about Jurgen Klopp, does that mean he should quit refereeing forever?

JC: I know, but then say he referees and Arsenal or Man United and they are in competition (with Liverpool).

GN: You said this in a low voice at the end of your answer: “I don’t see how he could still referee in this country”, and to be honest with you, I think that will probably be the most likely outcome, knowing the way. which we are obviously going into. But if you call Klopp a “c***” or Erik ten Hag a “c***”…

RK: This is a big step forward. It’s a big step for a guy to make a big mistake like that, whatever, to say “never referee again.”

GN: That’s what I mean, isn’t it? I agree with you… So from the point where you called out a manager, as you called it, and then that means you are basically canceled and will never be able to referee in this country again, I I’m having trouble with this. a little bit. I think maybe some sort of suspension, some punishment, but then I think you should be able to come back.

JC: I’m with you. He did something stupid, you can imagine what this guy is going through right now. I don’t want to, you know, talk about cancel culture, but what I mean is how could he… So he never got to referee a Liverpool game? But what I mean is it’s not just that he can’t referee Liverpool. How does he referee Everton, their rivals?

GN: My position, very clearly, is that I think he should probably get some sort of suspension. I think the Liverpool games will be a no-no for him, but I’d like to think he could come back and referee in the Premier League again. I don’t think someone gets completely canceled forever from doing their job for treating someone the way they did, I don’t think it’s worth it. It is not an offensive and dismissable respect to never work again. So to me, if they fire him, they’re effectively removing him from everyone’s employment list going forward. And for me, I don’t think that’s fair.

JS: I agree with you.

JC: I just think because of what he said about Liverpool, I think it makes it difficult. I don’t want to see anyone canceled… If you can referee in the championship or if he’s gone overseas… what I mean is if you’re Howard Webb, head of referees, the eyes and the Attention is turned to him in every match if he makes a decision. It favored Liverpool… I think it’s very difficult for him to referee – he couldn’t referee Liverpool’s games – the teams that were involved in those games. There would be so much attention.

RK: I think Jamie is a little extreme. We had Howard Webb here a few months ago, where they are obviously interested in referees who can’t handle the teams they supported or those from certain regions. So obviously they should look into his. He should obviously take some sort of punishment, raise his hand and definitely take a break from the match. But this idea, we could tell a referee trained for donkey years, that he made a stupid mistake… But then say that we cannot (referee again).

IW: I’m with Jamie on this. I’m not saying he should leave. I’m not saying he shouldn’t referee anymore. I’m just trying to describe the kind of mistake he made, and you go back to the people who reported him, even though the fourth officials – they’re all snitches anyway. But the fact is whoever exposed him has completely written him out in the Premier League simply because of all the variables that can happen.

GN: Personally, I think there is a way back for him in the Premier League.

RK: There must be.
