Arctic blast: Met Office forecasts winter weather to arrive as temperatures set to plunge in West Midlands

The Exeter-based national forecaster says the prospect of snow is notoriously difficult to predict and he posted an in-depth explanation on YouTube to take a look at the science of white matter.

One thing is certain, however: temperatures across the world West Midlands are expected to plunge as Arctic air descends across the country.

Regional forecasts indicate forecasters expect unsettled weather on Sunday with heavy rain or showers and stronger winds. Sunday evening, temperatures could drop to -5°C.

Temperatures up to 9°C below average for this time of year are possible, according to a post published by the Met Office on X, formerly Twitter.

There will be sunshine and showers on Monday but it will be colder and on Wednesday the highest temperature could be around 6°C.

The Met Office UK forecast for Monday to Wednesday and beyond indicates that frequent wintry showers are expected, mainly in the north and along the east and west coasts exposed to the strong north-northwest flow.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Rebekah Hicks explained: “A notable early winter cold snap will arrive in the north from Sunday and is likely to reach all parts of the UK by mid of the week.

“Temperatures will drop as a northern airflow develops, bringing colder Arctic air. This introduces the possibility of snow, initially over the northern heights from Sunday, with gusty winds also a potential danger.

She added: “There is a lot of uncertainty about what could happen after Sunday, but there are a number of scenarios that could bring more widespread rain, as well as snow on the hills and more winds. strong.

“It is possible that there will be more widespread snowfall in the lowlands, but the likelihood of that happening for any given region is low at this point. What we do know is that the entire UK is likely to experience a multi-day period of cold and potentially disruptive weather next week.

“Warnings for winter hazards including snow and ice are possible, so it is important to keep up to date with the latest forecasts. »
