Could snow fall on Alabama in November? Here’s what to expect next week

Don’t bring out the snowplows, but a snowflake sighting *might* be possible next week in parts of north Alabama.

Veteran meteorologist Jason Simpson of Birmingham’s WVTM 13 had the courage to mention the possibility in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday:

Simpson said the bigger story will be the possibility of much colder air arriving in Alabama in about a week.

The National Weather Service forecasts only seven days into the future, and the possible cold snap is just outside its forecast range. However, meteorologists mentioned the possibility during Thursday’s forecast discussion, saying, “It appears some cold weather is coming as well, although the timing and extent of that cold remains to be determined.” ยป

The NOAA Climate Prediction Center includes a low chance of below-average temperatures in its temperature forecast for November 21 (next Thursday) through November 27:

Temporary outlook 8 to 14 days

There will be a slightly higher chance of cooler than average temperatures in Alabama from November 21-27.CPC

According to the weather service, snow in November in Alabama is very, very rare but not uncommon:

*The first recorded snowfall in Huntsville was 4 inches on November 2, 1066.

* Anniston also got 0.8 inches on November 2, 1966.

*Muscle Shoals got 3.3 inches on November 24, 1938.

*Birmingham had 1.4 inches of snow on November 24, 1950.

*Montgomery and Tuscaloosa both had traces of snow in November: Montgomery in 2018 and Tuscaloosa in 2011.
