“I was happy to see, when I drove by here on Tuesday, and we were at a standstill, that they were putting up the lights,” said Hearne resident Renee Johnson.

TxDOT is installing new traffic lights in front of the Pilot gas station in Hearne.

It’s part of a plan to ensure safer traffic and make it easier for neighbors to cross the highway.

“Sometimes you have to wait maybe 15 to 20 minutes to get access to the road, so now I think with these traffic lights it will be like a benefit for this community,” said Jean Jeremie, a resident of Hearne.

15ABC I spoke with some neighbors about what they thought of these security improvements.

Resident Paula Thomas said 15ABC she believes the improvements will increase traffic in that area.

“It’s a good location for the store, but it’s also very busy,” Thomas said.

“The traffic is terrible, so with the lights I think it’s going to make things a little more hectic.”

But she tells 15ABC she appreciates that TxDOT keeps neighbors safe.

“The most important thing is the safety of everyone trying to come in and out of here,” Thomas said.

LRenee Johnson is excited about the new traffic lights.

“When I come back from Bryan, I want to stop here and grab something,” Johnson said. “I’m like, oh, maybe not because I have to cross the road, so that will make it a lot easier.”

Calling them a vital improvement for the community.

“Safety is a concern, as are all the big trucks and the speed coming in and out of Hearne, and actually it’s a great addition to the town,” Johnson said.
