Peel police give ‘good rating’ to Canadian officer seen in Brampton temple attack video

Peel Regional Police responded to a complaint of trespassing during a protest at the Hindu Sabba Temple on The Gore Road in Brampton on November 3 around 12 p.m.

The protest, which quickly escalated, raised public safety concerns, prompting officers to seize items that could be used as weapons.

According to an official press release, the police attempted to defuse the situation, but a video posted on social media captured an altercation between a police officer and a protester. The footage sparked concern in the community, prompting Peel Regional Police to conduct a review of the incident.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Peel Regional Police Crime Team Tyler Bell Morena shared the press release with the online public.

“Peel Regional Police understands the video has raised concerns in the community. We take all complaints regarding officer conduct seriously and have conducted a review of the incident,” the statement said.

Following an investigation, it was determined that the subject officer was attempting to disarm an individual who had refused to surrender his weapon and had become aggressive. “As a result, (the officer) acted within the lawful execution of his duties,” police said.

To provide further transparency, footage from a body-worn camera of the officer was released.

In response to the events of November 3 and 4, Peel Regional Police formed a Strategic Investigation Team to look into criminal incidents that occurred during the protests.

The team is actively seeking the public’s help in identifying suspects or providing background information related to the events. “Anyone with suspicious or general information is encouraged to contact police investigators. Information can also be provided anonymously by calling Peel Crime Stoppers,” the press release adds.

Peel Regional Police have emphasized their commitment to upholding the rights to peaceful assembly, as set out in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. However, they reiterated their policy of zero tolerance for violence, threats or vandalism during such gatherings.

“Peel Regional Police are committed to respecting everyone’s right to peacefully assemble. However, there is no tolerance for any act of violence, threat of violence or vandalism during a peaceful assembly,” the statement said. press release.

The statement concluded by appreciating the cooperation of the people who maintained peace during the events.

As investigations continue, police are urging the public to share any relevant information and stressing the importance of ensuring safety during protests.
