Kool Keith and Owen Pallett to headline Winterruption festival in January – Winnipeg Free Press

Underground hip-hop legend Kool Keith, king of alt-Americana Phosphorescent, prolific composer and Polaris Prize winner Owen Pallett and Halifax indie stars Nap Eyes will come to town in January to play the local leg of Winterruption Multi-City Festival.

Approximately 30 live artists will occupy various stages – the West End Cultural Centre, the Handsome Daughter, the Park Theatre, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, Forks Market and the new Sidestage venue in South Osborne – for performances between the 22 and January 26. .

The out-of-town lineup for this year’s festival also includes Toronto punk rockers Pkew Pkew Pkew; Cheekface, a slack-rock band from Los Angeles; sisterly Europop Liverpool duo Big Sis; Polaris’ long-list Toronto rapper DijahSB; and Toronto’s Jennifer Castle.

Thanks to its multi-stage staging, Winterruption transforms each show into an opportunity for musical discovery, built around posters composed of local, national and international groups.

Phosphorescent, directed by Matthew Houck, has just been released Developerhis first album in five years, while also composing the music for Paul Schrader’s upcoming film Oh, Canada. The band will play WECC on Jan. 22, opening for Secret Beach, the folk-pop recording project of Matlock’s Micah Erenberg.

Castle, who should generate significant buzz at Polaris for his new album, Camelotwill share the bill with Virgo Rising and tofusmell – her Real Love Summer Fest stagemates – at Handsome Daughter on January 23.

Later in the evening, New York hip-hop staple Kool Keith will perform at Sidestage with DijahSB and Winnipeg MC Dill the Giant (3peat). It’s a busy evening of music, as Pallett plays at WECC and Cheekface, along with twee-rioters Strawberry Punch, plays at The Park.
