Glasgow city center to see ‘rapid repairs’ after damning reports over ‘appearance’ of streets

Rapid repairs are to be carried out in Glasgow city center after businesses raised concerns about the “lower quality look and feel” of the streets.

The council now plans to spend money on sidewalks, benches, street washing and lighting, among other measures, to improve the core of the metropolis.

According to a council document, there would be a rapid response to small, neglected sections of streets with poor quality public spaces that “undermine investment opportunities”.

If the proposal is approved, areas around train and bus stations as well as routes to and around office areas and shopping destinations would be prime targets.

A council document says work will focus on areas where developers or investors have raised concerns.

Building on work already done, a council document says a “more innovative approach is needed to enable a relatively rapid response to smaller scale but higher impact urban planning issues”.

The project – dubbed the City Center Rapid Repair Project – would see improvements made on top of maintenance already carried out by the council. The work could be carried out within five days for urgent work.

According to the council report, recent consumer surveys carried out by local authorities revealed a perception of a lower quality look and feel of the town centre.

Businesses also expressed doubts about the “look and feel” of the city center and continued concerns about pedestrian routes connecting “major transportation hubs with commercial and financial districts.”

Half of the money for the rapid repairs program will come from developer contributions made as part of the building permit.

The project would operate as a one-year pilot and have a budget of £400,000, half of which would come from capital funding from the council’s city center strategy and the remaining £200,000 from developer contributions .

The new idea is the latest measure in the council’s 2024-2030 city center strategy. Previous actions have included providing grants for empty buildings and improving the appearance of the town centre.

Details of the city center rapid repair project will be presented to the city’s policy committee on the economy, housing, transport and regeneration next week.

The committee is asked to review the pilot project and refer it to the municipal administration committee for final approval.
