Man charged following siege in Melbourne’s west

Police have charged a 26-year-old man with a string of offenses following a siege in Melbourne’s west.

The man from Snake Valley, near Ballarat, in western Victoria, will face court on Friday evening for a string of offenses relating to an incident two days ago.

Detectives say on Wednesday the man stole a vehicle in Snake Valley and then drove to the suburb of Melton, more than an hour away.

Police monitored the vehicle to Leon Drive in Weir Views, where they say the man got out of the car and fired at police.

Police say the man then entered a home where a man and a young child he did not know were inside.

The police negotiated the release of the man and the small child.

It is alleged that the man then shot at police again, and that police returned fire and sent a dog to assist in the arrest.

The man was charged on Friday with more than 20 offences, including assault and firearms offenses against police.

The charges also include false imprisonment, dangerous driving, carjacking and making death threats.
