Caoimhin Kelleher reflects on penalty save as Republic of Ireland beat Finland

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher made a crucial intervention for the Republic of Ireland, saving a penalty in the 77th minute to help his country win 1-0 against Finland on Thursday night.

Kelleher has been one of the standout players in Arne Slot’s side in recent weeks as they helped Ireland to a vital victory at the Aviva Stadium.

The 25-year-old saved Joel Pohjanpalo’s penalty and prevented Robin Lod’s follow-up, with Evan Ferguson’s goal enough for the Nations League victory.

On the penalty and the match, Kelleher reflected: “Before he intervened, I just watched the run-up and followed my instincts and luckily I took the right path.

“I think in the first half we were lucky at times. (There were) two on the post, good defense and a couple of good blocks, which you have to do sometimes.

“Luckily we scored a great goal and I think we just defended. Apart from the penalty there weren’t many chances, so there are positives to take from that.”

The Republic of Ireland will now finish third in Group B2 after England’s win over Greece and face a play-off next year while Finland are relegated.

Caoimhin Kelleher, who is often considered the best backup goalkeeper in the world, has conceded just five goals in his eight games for Slot’s Reds this season as they sit atop the Premier League and League tables of Champions.

However, with Alisson Becker expected to return from injury after the November international break, Kelleher is likely to play only a handful of Carabao Cup and FA Cup matches.

“Alisson is and will be our first goalkeeper if he is fit,” Slot said after Liverpool’s win over Aston Villa.

“Caoimhin did exceptional things last season and again this season. But as soon as Alisson is fit, he will be our first goalkeeper.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool legend John Aldridge, writing in a Liverpool Echo Chronicle claims it would be unfair for Kelleher to be left behind when Alisson returns.

“Caoimhin Kelleher has been magnificent and I actually think Arne Slot has a very big decision to make in the next few weeks. Once Alisson is fit I don’t think it’s fair if Kelleher is demoted on the bench”, said the former Republic of Ireland striker.

“I think he’s been absolutely first class. He’s been faultless in everything he’s done in the games, and I think (Alisson) will look at him and be embarrassed if he comes back because he did such a good job.”
