‘It hurts so much’: Mother recalls daughter’s last words as she was crushed under container after accident in Penang

Netizens paid tribute to the late Ms Lee even as others called for more action against the errant driver.

“It’s terrible, a mother’s nightmare. Condolences to her family and may she rest in peace. I hope the driver is held accountable,” said user X @ladymissazira.

Another X user @sayapkiri188 said drivers who cause serious accidents like the one in Penang deserve to be treated to the fullest extent of the law, but added that they should also compensate the victims’ families.

User X @parvin_84 shared his condolences and hopes that the victim’s mother “is doing well”.

“It’s heartbreaking just to read. I can’t imagine hearing someone you love say that while you are completely helpless,” he wrote, referring to Ms. Lee’s final phone call.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Anthony Loke has spoken out on the accident and said the operating license of the trailer company involved could be suspended if it is found to be non-compliant with safety regulations.

“The Land Public Transport Agency, in collaboration with the Road Transport Directorate (JPJ), will carry out an audit of the company. If they fail or do not comply with safety measures, their license will be suspended,” he said on November 14 after an event organized by the Malaysian Maritime Institute, as quoted by local news agency Bernama.

“This is a tragic and regrettable event that should never have happened and action must be taken. »

Mr Loke added that his ministry was committed to carrying out a thorough investigation to determine whether the cause of the accident was linked to a technical problem, a faulty container or negligence in securing it. He also called on the Malaysian Road Safety Research Institute to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation.

The 51-year-old driver was remanded in custody for four days to facilitate investigations under section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless driving, according to local media.

If found guilty, the driver faces a prison term of up to 10 years, a fine of up to RM50,000 (US$11,248) and a ban from driving for a period of 10 to 20 years .

Mr Loke also expressed disappointment at the driver’s callous behavior with local media reporting that the man appeared at the Bukit Mertajam Magistrate’s Court and flashed a peace sign to the media. Mr Loke said the gesture showed a lack of sympathy for the victim’s family who are still grieving.

Deputy Commissioner Helmi Aris – Seberang Perai Tengah district police chief – confirmed on November 13 that urine drug tests carried out on the driver came back negative for alcohol.
